The Abbey of San Michele located overlooking the sea (about 91 meters high) you can admire the imposing complex religious and cultural center of ‘island .

The oldest part dates back to the 15th century. Born as a Benedictine monastery it was presumably dedicated to San Michele , the first commendatory of the island was Marcantonio Arcamone , in 1489.

The abbey consists of a central nave and two side aisles, on the left side there is a further nave with three chapels, once you cross the main entrance threshold you can admire a splendid coffered ceiling of wood gilded in pure gold with rosettes carved (completed towards the end of 1600), in the center is the most presigious painting, San Michele defeating Satan.

The structure of the Abbey

To enter the abbey there are two facades, the main one also known as Porta del Carmine with a fresco depicting the Madonna del Carmine, the other entrance located on the opposite side characterized by the statue of St. Michael the Archangel (restored in 1890).

Terra Murata

The Land House ...

Today known as Terra Murata or “Terra enclosed by walls”, it is one of the oldest villages on the island of Procida, located on a steep tuff ridge at about 91 meters above sea level. Today one of the most visited destinations by tourists.

Starting from the 9th century after the first barbarian invasions and the following Saracene became the inhabited nucleus of the island and the only safe refuge for the inhabitants. On the one hand protected by walls overlooking the sea on the other side by the fortified walls, to the visitor it may seem an inviolable place.

For enter the village even today you pass through the Iron Gate present since 1563, it is also possible to see the two long-range cannons dating back to the Neapolitan Republic of 1799 . The land of Casata had two access doors: the Porta della Terra (or Sant’Angelo) and the Porta di Mezz’omo.

Inside the citadel a completely autonomous life took place and separated from the remaining areas of the island, based on the cultivation of fields and textiles.

Corricella

When it comes to Procida it is difficult not to say Corricella, it is an ancient fishing village and even today it is easy to meet local people who work near the fishing nets .

Loved by writers, poets and artists, it was chosen by Massimo Troisi for the unforgettable film Il postino, there is also a small square in his name.

The small village is characterized by its colorful houses clearly visible from afar, legend has it that the pastel colors of the houses (pink, yellow, white, blue, orange) were used by local fishermen to recognize their homes from the sea.

The port of Corricella can be reached only from the sea orby stairs, no cars, motorcycles or bicycles. There are two routes to reach the village, the first route (recommended for those coming down from Terra Murata) located near Piazza dei Martiri follows a steep descent known as San Rocco , near the stairs you can find your way around with a small ice cream shop, tobacconist’s or bar.

The second path (Callìa) includes about 150 steps, the particularity is that before going down you can admire a beautiful panorama on Corricella and Terra Murata and on days with the right visibility also Capri.

The Chiaia beach together with the beach of Via dei Bagni is the most central beach on the island but also the most tortuous to reach thanks to its 186 steps . The beach is characterized by a very shallow shore and the water is crystal clear, therefore ideal for children in complete safety.

The bay of Chiaia is surrounded by a ridge of rock on which there are some houses with typical island architecture, on the other the port of Corricella, a small marine nativity scene made up of colored houses set between the rock and the the hill on which stands Terra Murata , the oldest nucleus of Procida. While in front of the absolute protagonist is the very blue sea.

It is also characterized by the delimitation of Via dei Bagni from the boulders of volcanic origin that can be easily traveled to change beach .

The sun will rise early around 7:30 in the morning. Once arrived, the hours pass in total relaxation, to remember that on this beach the sun does not set and you can see it go away already around 15: 00-15: 30 in the afternoon even in the height of summer.

The beach of Via dei Bagni together with the beach of Chiaia is one of the most central beaches on the island, reachable via steps.

The beach is very similar to the Chiaia beach characterized by a very low shore bottom and the water is crystal clear , therefore ideal for children .

The bay of Via dei Bagni is surrounded by a ridge of rock with a splendid view of the small port of Corricella and Terra Murata , even more visible than its counterpart.

The beach of Via dei Bagni is characterized by the delimitation from that Chiaia with volcanic boulders that can be easily traveled to change the beach.

The Spiaggia di Ciraccio is probably the longest beach on the island of Procida .

Characterized by different types of backdrops . It has rocky areas, as well as the Chiaiolella beach, also here you can see the bridge that connects Procida with Vivara and behind the island of Ischia.

The beach is free , but if necessary it is easy to get to the initial part connected to Chiaiolella for beaches, bars and restaurants.

The Beach of Marina di Chiaiolella whose “real” name is Ciracciello today better known as “The beach” , is the longest and frequented by the island of Procida .

The beach of Pozzo Vecchio or better known as The Postino Beach thanks to Massimo Troisi for his 1994 film, still very popular today.

The bay is surrounded by vegetation, cliffs, coves and caves that are visible from both the beach and the sea and can be reached by swimming. The water is crystal clear and the shallow shore creates a splendid contrast with a dark-colored sand, making the Postino beach a place full of colors, giving the eyes a unique game of contrasts and an even more pleasant stay.

The Marina di Chiaiolella, today is one of the most coveted places on the island of Procida for a landscape that offers a splendid sunset on the seafront.

Originally one of the areas where there was a strong agricultural development due to the preseza of marshes.

The Chiaiolella church was built in the nineteenth century and various renovations expanded and refurbished it, since 1841 it has been dedicated to San Giuseppe. It has a Latin cross structure with a single nave and small side chapels.

On the main altar there is a marble aedicule in which the statue of the patron saint St. Joseph of the eighteenth century is placed, at the top of which there is a shell with the inscription ITE AD JOSEPH. The dome and the bell tower date back to the 19th century and stand out among the town of Marina Chiaiolella. Of particular importance are the canvases present.
