The Abbey of San Michele: Where the Faith Meets Infinity
Suspended between the blue of the sky and the blue of the sea of Terra Murata,Abbey of San Michele Arcangelo is the pulsating heart of the procidal identity. Located about 91 meters high, overlooking the cliffs of tuff, this imposing complex is not only the main religious center of the island, but a living museum that preserves centuries of art and devotion.
A Time Trip: From Origins to Avalos
The roots of the Abbey sink in the distance 15th century. Born as a Benedictine monastery, the structure has undergone many transformations. It was 1489, under the first commendatario of the island Marcantonio Arcamone, which the complex began to assume the importance we recognize today. Dedicated to San Michele, protector of the island against pirate raids, the Abbey has become a symbol of resistance and faith over time.
Interior Treasures: Gold, Wood and Color
Crossing the threshold, the eye is immediately caught by a masterpiece of ebanisteria: the splendid coffered ceiling golden wood with gold diamond. Completed towards the end of 1600, the ceiling shines with its own light thanks to the hand carved roses. The most prestigious work is found in the centre: the painting San Michele defeats Satan, an image dear to all sailors on the island.
The interior architecture is majestic, with a central nave, two side aisles and a further nave on the left that houses three chapels rich of ex-voto (offers of the faithful saved from the sea).
The Structure and the Secret Undergrounds
The Abbey has two main entrances:
- La Porta del Carmine: The main façade, recognisable by the splendid fresco of Madonna del Carmine.
- The Lateral Entrance: Characterized by the statue of St. Michael the Archangel, restored in 1890, which welcomes the faithful from the alleys of Terra Murata.
But the true secret of the Abbey is under the floor. The underground houses an extraordinary 16th century library with thousands of ancient texts, a complex of catacombs and an ossuary, as well as a suggestive exhibition of artistic nativity scenes and archaeological finds.
