Full guide to the beaches of Procida: which to choose and how to find them
If you arrive at Procida for the sea, don't just look for the most famous beach on social media. The bays of the island work differently depending on the time, wind and how long you want to walk. Some are comfortable and equipped, others are larger and wilder, others are still small and perfect for a regenerating bath in the air.
Procida is not an island of great continuous sandy stretches: it is a microcosm of coves, short stretches of coastline, volcanic seabeds and passages that change face with the change of light. Here is the complete mapping of all the shores of the island to choose the perfect one for your day.
Western Versant: late sun and large spaces
This side of the island is the longest, receives sunlight throughout the day and is perfect for those who want to enjoy the sea until sunset.
Chiaiolella: the simplest and most complete choice
The beach of Chiaiolella (also called Ciracci) is the most frequented, because it unites the sea to a walk full of bars, bathing establishments and restaurants. His strength lies inincredible practicality: access is linear, the services are all at hand and the backgrounds gently degradate, making it ideal for those travelling with children. From here, you can also admire a wonderful view ofislet of Vivara.
Ciraccio: more space, nature and relaxation
It is the natural continuation of the Chiaiolella, from which it is separated only from two majestic tuff plows. The beach of Ciraccio is more wild and quiet: here you breathe more space, there is less visual crowding and the beating is wider, great to avoid the lime of the central hours. It houses wide stretches of free beach and enjoys the sun until the last ray.
Northern Versant: convenience and logistics in Marina Grande
Ideal for those who visit the island on day, for those travelling without a car or for a regenerating bath at the beginning or end of the trip.
Silurence: comfort at hand
It is located in a few minutes walk from the port of Marina Grande (side cliffs/grotes). It is a extremely strategic choice, equipped with plants and bars. Very loved by local families, has as a symbol the "Scoglio del Cannone", from which guys and tourists love to dive. It allows you to make a beautiful bathroom without planning bus trips.
Language beach: pebbles and deep sea
Located at the opposite end of Marina Grande (late hydrofoils), the beach of the Language. Unlike the others, is not made of sand but pebbles and is completely free. The sea here is open, the waters are immediately deep and an intense blue, ideal for those who love to swim. Look straight to the mainland and the Procida channel.
Versante Orientale e Meridionale: hidden bays and postcard views
Here the sand is dark and volcanic, the rock ribs protect from the wind and the views open on the Murata Land and the Corricella.
Beach of Chiaia and access to Via dei Bagni
Set in the centre of the island, La Chiaia is one of the most spectacular beaches and sheltered by the wind. You can only reach by foot or by sea through two historic accesses that ideally divide the beach:
- The famous staircase of Piazza Olmo (186 steps) that takes you to the right side of the bay.
- The suggestive lapse of Via dei Bagni, a pedestrian street enclosed between the dry walls that slopes towards the sea and which gives its name to this specific side of the beach.
The fatigue of the descent (and the next lift) is rewarded by a fine black sand language with a breathtaking view of the village of Corricella. The sun here goes away in the early afternoon, so it is a perfect beach to live in the morning.
Pozzo Vecchio beach (or Postino beach)
Located on the north-west side, under the island's cemetery, this horseshoe-shaped bay is famous all over the world for being the set of the film "Il Postino" with Massimo Troisi. The beach of the postman is characterized by a dark volcanic sand which contrasts with turquoise water. It is almost entirely free (there is only a small plant with kiosk) and preserves an intimate and wild atmosphere.
For real explorers: the cliffs
If you prefer rock and look for maximum tranquility, the island offers two alternative points:
- The Rocks of Lighthouse: Located under the lighthouse of the island, they are large platforms of comfortable tuff to lay the towel. The sea here is immediately deep, ideal for snorkeling.
- The Coal Cliffs: An impervious and wild area, difficult to reach by land, suitable almost exclusively for those who move by boat and seek total isolation.
Practical advice of blogger: how to orientate with winds
In Procida, to find the perfect sea, you have to look at the wind:
- If it blows Maestrale (from North-West), the most sheltered and flat beaches will be Chiaia (side Via dei Bagni) and the Language.
- If he blows it Scirocco (from South East), the best choice is Chiaiolella, Ciraccio and Old well.
Smart tip: Remember that transport is managed by bus EAV (the lines L1, L2 and C1 will take you near almost all the accesses of the beaches, including the entrance of Via dei Bagni), but walk allows you to discover unique views. Always combine the beach with the village you want to visit, minimizing travel to enjoy the true procidal slowness.
